Go with Tap … its a lot more fun in a tap class than in a ballet!

There are many things that keep dancers, especially adults, from excelling in their dance classes. As a professional tap dance instructor I have seen these play out with many of my students.
Some would say that to be great, you should have started dancing when you were 3 years old. If you didn’t make that cut off, you’re out of luck!
Those folks are wrong.
Yet here are some things that really do limit students of dance of all ages.
1. Self-Limiting Beliefs
Do you really believe that it’s never too late to get started? Or are you just “hoping” that it’s never too late to get started?
Many of us pay lip service to the idea of it never being too late, but deep down, we don’t think that applies to us.
Guess what? it does!
In the case of tap dancers, many often continue honing their craft well into old age. This means that, even if you are in your 70’s, you may still have 30+ good years of tap ahead of you! Think that’s enough time to learn to do it well? ( I’ve been dancing for a little over 10) Many times we limit ourselves by how we choose to perceive our reality (didn’t mean to get so metaphysical on you.)
Take a moment to ask yourself if you “really” believe it’s never too late to try something new, the real answer may surprise you.
2. Physical Injuries
You need to consult your physician before starting any rigorous movements. Injuries can occur, or previously existing conditions can be aggravated, especially if you’ve not been active in a while.
And if something you are doing causes pain, stop doing it!
See your physician before starting. After all, you can’t dance in a hospital bed.
3. Being Overwhelmed
As adults, we often have very hectic schedules, which can impede our ability to attend dance classes on a regular basis. Between work, family, & personal duties, attending class and practicing can get lost in the mix. There is no easy solution. Each student has to manage it in their own way.
I will say that if dance is important to you, you’ve got to treat it that way!
4. Poor Practice Habits
This one is not just limited to adult students! Regardless of your age, here is the truth of the matter. If you want to get your money’s worth from any dance class, you must set aside some time for practicing.
Time spent with dance away from class, is actually more valuable than the time in class.
Now, if you are attending dance classes as a way to make new friends and connect with new people, you may not need to practice. But if you want to become a more skilled dancer, you don’t have a choice.
My rule of thumb is that you should spend at least one hour practicing outside of class, for every hour you spend in class. This means that, if you attend a weekly one-hour class, and practice “perfectly” for only ten minutes a day the remaining 6 days of the week, you will see major improvement.
I promise.
